Tips to Speed Up Windows 10

Windows 10 PC was all shiny and glittery when launched. It has been one of the best versions of Windows operating system and it gives the best experience to the user. With regular updates, the performance of your computer seems to get better and better. However, you may face some hiccups such as decrease in speed. 

Some of the following tips to speed up Windows 10 will be discussed in the following guide.
Tips and Tricks That Make Windows 10 Faster

Many users have found Windows 10 working slower than its preceding versions. It may have been working faster before your device got loaded with your folders, files, applications and other extras. There are a few tips which will help you overcome a slow PC and speed up Windows 10.

1.Choose a Suitable Power Plan

Windows 10 comes with a Power saver plan that tends to slow down the PC. This is because it tends to reduce your PC’s performance ability to save your electricity. Thus, make sure you change your default power plan to High Performance to give your PC an instant boost.
Go to Control Panel -> Hardware and Sound -> Power Options. Here, you will see two options Balanced (recommended) and Power saver. High Performance adds to muscle power of your PC, but tends to use more electricity. Balance will help you find the balance between better performance and use of power. If you are a desktop user, then you do not need to use the power saver plan. However, laptop users should try using High Performance when connected to a power source and Balanced when unplugged.

2.Reduce the Number of Start-up Programs in Windows 10

Just like the previous versions, of Windows, you can disable the start-up programs in Windows 10 too. Al you need to do is press Control + Shift + Esc or right-click the lower corner of the screen. Then select Task Manager. When Task Manager is launched, a compact app will appear on the screen with no tabs and click on ‘More details’ at the bottom of the screen. Click at it and you will be able to kill all the unnecessary programs that launch on start up.
Just scroll down the list and right-click on the program and click ‘Disable’. This means the program is not disabled, but only prevented from launching at startup. Thus, you will find your computer is relatively faster when you start your computer after you disable the unnecessary applications.

3.Clean Up Registry

Registry keeps a track of everything happing with Windows and controls the way it works and appears. However, even after you uninstall a program, the settings related to it never get up in the Registry. Thus, you have countless useless settings piling up. This can slow up your computer over time.

You need a Registry Cleaner that will help you remove all the useless items in your Registry. You can try using Auslogics Registry Cleaner that helps you clean up your computer’s Registry and even allows you to restore in case something is deleted by mistake. 

4.Disable The Glam Effects

Windows 10 comes with many eye-catching effects such as animations, visual effects as well as shadows. But this tends to slow down the performance, especially on slower, older version PC’s. Thus, it is better to turn it off. Just go to Windows 10 search box and type sysdm.cpl  and hit Enter.
This command will launch System Properties and on clicking Advanced tab, click ‘Settings’. You will reach Performance Options dialog box where you can see different animations and special effects.
You can turn on and off the animations and special effects as per your needs. It is even better if you just select ‘Adjust for best performance’ at the top of the screen and click OK. Thus, all the effects that slow down you system will be turned off by Windows 10.

5.Check the Performance Monitor

Windows 10 comes with a wonderful feature called the Performance monitor. It gives you a detailed report related to your PC, system as well as any performance issues and will come up with suggestions.

You need to type perfmon /report in the search box and then press Enter. After about several minutes, the Resource and Performance Monitor will provide you with an interactive report.
It gives a very detailed report and takes time to look at. You should go to Warning section and find big issues, if any. It will even provide you with solutions to fix any problem. 

6.Turn Off Search Indexing

Whenever you search for a file in the Documents library, it gives you results immediately. However, this is the result of indexing that can slow down your PC. You need to turn off all indexing by right-clicking C: drive and selecting Properties.  In General tab, uncheck Allow files on this drive to have contents indexed in addition to file properties. A warning box will appear and you need to select Apply changes to drive C:\, subfolders and files. This process takes time, so better try it before lunch time.

In case you want to turn of certain indexing, then you need to type indexing in Cortana. Then choose Indexing Options and click Modify near the lower-left side. A new dialog box will open with two sections. Begin with Summary of selected locations right at the bottom of the dialog box. Click at any of the options and it will change the contents in the top section. When you uncheck the items in Change selected locations it will stop indexing those locations.

7.Clean the internal drive

If the internal storage is full then it will definitely slow down your computer. In Cortana, type disk and select Disk Cleanup. Allow disk cleanup to examine your drive and then click Clean up system files. Try checking the options as well. If you are lucky you will find Previous Windows installation(s). Check it and then click OK. It will free up a lot of space. 

These are a few tips to speed up Windows 10.  You can even try running Windows Defender and check for any malicious software taking up space in your computer or making it run slow. These methods will help you speed up your Windows 10 PC.
