What is Static and Dynamic IP?

Many Internet users often have a question what is static and dynamic IP address. Before we explain static IP and dynamic IP, let us first speak about what is IP address.

The Internet Service Provider (ISP) assigns an IP address to your Internet-enabled device. This IP address is unique to your computer and can help identify your device from others.

What is Static IP?

A static IP address or fixed IP address is a number that is assigned by the ISP. It is a permanent address of your Internet-enabled device. Computers use it to locate and transfer information amongst them.

The static IP address is useful for people who:
  • Own a website
  • Have their own email server
  • Need to access a VPN from multiple PCs using a single broadband service
  • Those who use an off-site server duplication
  • Who need to use certain security services like cameras
  • Run an FTP server

A static IP address is better than dynamic IP address as it has a low downtime risk.  Also, one can access their PC from any location in the world using a static IP address.

What is Dynamic IP?

A dynamic IP address is the one that is temporarily assigned to a computer. This temporarily IP address is requested to a Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) computer. It assigns dynamic IP address from a pool of IP addresses. When the DHCP computer requests for a dynamic IP address, the number is assigned for duration of that Internet session. Once the Internet-enabled device is disconnected from the Internet, the dynamic IP address is sent back to the IP address pool. This IP address can then be reused for another user, when needed.

A dynamic IP address is advantageous for those who:
  • Use several computers using an internal network and require sharing limited address space.
  • Use just one device to connect to the main location using a one-way Virtual Private Network (VPN).

This was some information regarding static IP and dynamic IP address. The static IP address remains fixed and dynamic IP address is assigned temporarily. Both are important and help users connect to the Internet easily.

Microsoft Edge or Google Chrome: Which to Choose?

Choosing the right browser actually depends on how you feel about it. A browser that fulfills all your needs and allows you to work with ease is the best for you. However, if you are musing about Microsoft Edge or Google Chrome, let us learn more about them before you make a decision.

Google Chrome

Chrome has become synonymous with web browsing. The first thing that comes to mind with Chrome is Gmail. It allows complete integration of your Google account and has shortcuts to reach your favorite Google features.

It free and allows you to enjoy a load of features. Google Chrome is a cross-platform browser and can work on any version of Windows. The interface is user-friendly and simple to use. It has a clean look and you can install themes to make it look more you. However, the themes hardly change anything and it appears more like wallpaper than an actual theme.

When you take the Kraken and RoboHornet test, Chrome tops them all. It even manages to top the HTML5 compatibility test. Chrome will warn users of any websites it thinks contains malware or can carry out a phishing attack. Thus, the user can continue on their own risk. It runs in a sandbox process that protects the user from malware without them even knowing about it.

When Chrome detects a website in a foreign language, it will automatically offer the user to translate it in the language they are comfortable in. It even helps in creating desktop shortcuts for specific Web links and has a supervised user feature. This feature allows certain users from accessing certain sites only, blocks specific sites, force safe search, etc.

Microsoft Edge

Microsoft Edge appears like the modern younger brother of Internet Explorer. It has a streamlined toolbar, fewer icons and in tandem with the overall look of Windows 10. The one feature that actually makes it stand out is complete integration of AI-assistant Cortana.

You could choose from the Light and Dark themes an toggle a Favorites bar in Edge. This is all you can do with the Edge when it comes to customization. When it comes to speed tests, Chrome definitely takes the crown away from Edge.

As far as Addons and Extensions are considered, Microsoft Edge does not have much to offer. It lacks the extensibility support and the company calls it their strict rules before an extension is allowed to go online.

Security and privacy on Edge is groundbreaking in some has a built-in SmartScreen feature that performs a reputation check on websites and even blocks websites that are flagged as phishing websites. It no longer supports ActiveX and VBScript that has several security flaws.

In the war of Microsoft Edge versus Google Chrome, which one is better, Chrome definitely turns out to be a clear winner. Microsoft Edge is exclusively available for Windows 10 users only.
Thus, making it difficult to reach more users who are still use Windows 7, 8 or 8.1. If you are a Windows 10 user, then you can try using Edge. Only after you use it, it will help you decide if it is Chrome or Edge that is made for you.

Common Wi-Fi Problems and Their Solutions

Wi-Fi has become an integral part of our lives. There was a time when you had to disconnect from the Wi-Fi in order to make a phone call. Today, this problem is eliminated; however many other problems have cropped up. Do not pull your hair in irritation, instead read on to find out more about common Wi-Fi problems and their solutions.

Common Wi-Fi Problems with Their Simple Solutions

The minute the Wi-Fi loses connectivity, people begin to panic. It has become as important as the air we breathe. If you too are facing some common Wi-Fi problems, then the following simple solutions may help solve your problem.

1.Slow Internet

A consistent slow Internet connection means you are too far away from the router. If your router is placed in another move, try working near the router. If this still does not fix the issue, then maybe there are some other problems to be addressed. Like an electronic device or furniture around it that is interfering with its signal. Try placing the router away from your cordless phone, microwave, television, books, etc. Place it right at the top so that it faces no interference.

If this still does not work, then you may have bandwidth problem. Too many devices connected to a single network may cause thinning of the Internet speed. Try disconnecting most of the devices and then check the speed. You may notice it does become faster than usual.

If nothing works then your router is needs a wakeup call. Press the reset button and bring it back to its factory settings. Reset the settings and try connecting to the Internet. If there is no difference then you need to call your ISP right away and them to look into the matter.

2.Certain Areas Have No Connectivity

This is a common problem faced by many. You may need to move your router to a better place around the house. Try placing it in the central room away from any interference. You can try adjusting the antenna by moving it in different directions. In case you live in an apartment with many other routers around you, their signals may be interfering with you router signal. Try to change the channel of your router to get a stronger signal. If nothing helps, get a wireless repeater to help improve the connectivity.

3.Connection Keeps Dropping

Does your connection keeps dropping randomly? If this is a regular problem, then try noticing the drop time. If it tends to happen every time you enter a room or when using electronic devices such as the microwave, your router is functioning on 2.5GHz frequency. It may even happen if the neighbors are heavy Internet bandwidth users. So, better change your frequency to 5GHz.

4.Certain Devices Cannot Connect to the Network

Does your smartphone or new laptop is not able to connect to your Wi-Fi network? Then try switching off your router, unplugging it and then plugging it back in after a couple of minutes. You can even delete the current network from your device and then re-connecting it. You can even run the ‘Wireless Diagnostics’ on Windows or ‘Wi-Fi Troubleshooting’ on Mac. This will give you a fair idea about the underlying problem.

5.Wi-Fi Suddenly Goes Off Network

Do you find your Wi-Fi network suddenly go off radar? The reason may be the router is resetting itself. You may need to reset the settings of your router and getting it re-configured. Press the reset button on your router and then open any web browser on your computer. Enter the default IP address and log in to the router admin page. Change the settings and make sure you keep your Wi-Fi network password protected.

6.Wi-Fi Connected, No Internet

You may find your device has connected to your Wi-Fi network. But, there is no Internet Access. Try connecting the router with an Ethernet cord and see if the Internet works now. If not, then there may be a connection outage from your ISP.

7.Need to Restart Router Repeatedly

If you find yourself restarting your router repeatedly as it continuously keeps crashing, then just hit the reset button. Reset and re-configure the router from scratch. If this too does not help, then your router is dying and you need to consider buying a new one.

8.Forgot Wireless Password

Forgot your wireless password? Do not worry. There is no need to reset your wireless router. Just login to your router admin page by entering your default username and password. You may find the router admin page address and default username and password printed at the back of your router device. Once you login, go to the security settings tab and scroll down to the password or passkey. Here, you will find your password for connecting to your wireless network. Note it down and use it to connect your new device to your current Wi-Fi network.

These are some of the common Wi-Fi problems and their solutions. Try these out before you call a technician to help you.
